Bulldog Toolscurrently employs over 65 people, most of whom are multi-skilled. It is quite common for several generations of the same family to have worked for the company with some employees tracing their family ties back four generations.
Farmers, contractors and professional landscapers stand as a testament to the quality of product upon which their livelihood depends. The skill and craftsmanship that was the key to the company’s success in years gone by, are still maintained and the same forging process is used to this day. Bulldog Tools uses a unique specification steel which results in exceptionally strong tool heads with the flexibility to absorb all the shock and pressure of hard work, without distorting or breaking. The timber for the handles is all purchased from sustainable sources.
Why Bulldog Tools are the best
Solid Forged for Exceptional Strength
Bulldog heads and sockets are forged from a single piece of steel, and then securely attached to the shaft. The absence of welding eliminates points of weakness, resulting in a durable, longer lasting tool. The steel is heated and stamped into a T blank using a 600 tonne press. The block of steel is heated again to over 1100 degrees so that it can be worked into its final shape by a process of rolling and pressing. The finished heads are shot blasted then powder coated and painted for protection.
The Strongest Socket
Bulldog Tools recognises that where the shaft joins the socket is potentially the weakest point of the spade. Bulldog buries the shaft deep inside the socket, increasing the durability and resilience of the tool’s inherent strength, ensuring it is able to withstand the toughest of use.
The Bulldog Handle
Bulldog Tools handles are manufactured from high quality sustainable wood. Our timber is carefully selected for quality and straightness of grain, each shaft is then varnished for weather protection. The Y shaped handle, for example, is split at the end, steamed open for 20 minutes and then placed into a template shape for three to four days to create the final shape.
Tested for Strength
Bulldog spades are regularly sample tested by being repeatedly loaded and bent on a bend test machine. The British Standard dictates that after a load of 150lbs is put on the end of the handle, held for three minutes and released, the handle should return to within 25mm of its original position. A Bulldog spade typically returns to within 2mm to 3mm! Not only this, but Bulldog spades take a loading well over 200lbs without permanent damage!
